A montage of the pages from my journal: The Nyakyusa that I wrote during my social anthropological field research in Tanzania for the Ethnological Faculty of the University of Berlin in the year 1988. The Nyakyusa are a cattle-herding agricultural community who live in southern regions of Tanzania and in northern Malawi. I took lessons in the local language and traveled extensively through the hilly regions, much of it accessible only on foot.

The magic inside a piece of cloth
  • 2008
  • Necktie, shirt and sandals on hardboard
  • 100 x 70cm

This work was inspired by some sarcastic comments from people, including my colleagues at the airport Tegel, Berlin, on seeing a Bavarian peasant wearing corduroy shorts with straps, a necktie, and sandals with long socks. A necktie literally imposed a specific set of dress code, and certainly no sandals. The peasant, by the way, was authentically a gentleman, absolutely a fatherly adult, and certainly above the mundane rut, to even notice the surprised looks, some even jeering from a couple of the ladies. The event inspired me to write a whole essay on the magic of this small piece of textile in the industrial world.

Trudging up the road less high hills in Busokelo, I finally arrived at Itete, where the elders of the village gathered to vote on my presence. Voted positive, my welcome was followed by a ritual sharing of a bucket of Pombe(“porridge beer”) passed first from the chief to the welcomed guest, and which I handed over to the next person, till it was shared by all. I prepared to pitch my tent in the courtyard of the Chief’s house, as I always did. I was conducting field research for the Dept. of Ethnology, the Free University of Berlin. But for the Chief, Mr. Mwobogelo, it was unthinkable that I should sleep 'in the wild' when his own home had space to offer.
This portrait of his daughter, is a tribute to the grace of the family Mwobogelo, who turned a stranger into a guest, and a village into a memory that never fades.

Frequented by Bob Dylan, Jerry Garcia, Joni Mitchel, Crosby, Stills, Young and Nash, Joplin, and the protagonists of the gritty American literary rebellion, the beat poets, as they called themselves, with Ginsberg and Kerouac seeking inspiration at the City Lights Bookstore. There, Bob Dylan once dodged a mob of fans by climbing out of the bookstore window. For the fans of Star Trek, only a few years earlier, to save the whales, Admiral Kirk and Spock walked past this place in Star Trek IV. The drawing (1991) is based on a photo that I shot, just weeks before the '89 earthquake.

From the series:

The perceptions can vary in the manner listed below, though not necessarily in the same sequence.
1. As a curved surface with four longitudinal convex shapes spaced close to one another. Perceived source of light: To the right side of the observer.
2. As four columns of equal length and width amidst a dark background. Perceived source of light: To the right of the observer.
3. As four either slightly curved or totally flat rectangular sheet-like shapes spaced in a row and protruding right out of the frame (canvas) into the room, where the painting is hanging without any bottom surface. Perceived source of light: To the left of the observer.
4. As a concave folded space with three outward-protruding prominent ridges. This perception changes. The curved space between the ridges transforms to flat planes, the ridges then seem to be inclined, and as a further transformation, suddenly appear in the foreground as a kind of grid on a colored background, like a latticework. This may yet again turn into a horizontal view of a staircase-like structure. The perceived source of light varies from the front to the left side of the observer.
