Retrospective

The creative process, of whatever sort, is always rewarding in itself. But I must admit that one often doubts its social relevance, especially when the product is an artwork, aside from the one assigned to it by the gatekeeper class for a select audience. No Pericles' visits to Phidias! Or the merchant class to the studio of Rembrandt. This has changed a bit, though, for those who have marketed their works online. But that is nothing intrinsically different; it is just replacing the middleman by the artist and involves all the work that the professional gatekeepers do. Moreover, nowadays art is viewed entirely as a commodity for the exchange of a volatile currency, where success is measured by the price tag attached to the artwork. I had feebly attempted to follow that path in my youth, but I soon realized that my artwork was entirely a personal exploration. I have not embraced any current paradigm, nor did I have a disruptive message for the world, or rather, the gatekeepers. The world is being disrupted enough.

I have rarely ever exhibited my work. My friends did it twice for me. I never had the time to deal with marketing my work because I had other necessary occupations, obligations, and interests. Add to that I had also some, perhaps culturally acquired or because of my upbringing, inhibitions following that specific path, besides, of course, the nagging doubt about its social relevance. However, I do get occasional messages from my fans, who have brought my works, to hear things that would dispel all the doubts an artist may have about his works. Indeed, it is surprising and a cause for joy to see some of my works being valued more than I myself ever did. In fact, it was this pleasant fact that made me want to publish my work.
