Watercolors

I associate watercolors primarily with two things. Mobility and Spring. Mobility? Because it hardly requires anything more than a watercolor box-set and a drawing pad. Spring? Perhaps because, back in Kashmir during my childhood, the Spring, according to the lore, was announced by the arrival and distinctive call of the colorful hoopoe (Upupa epops). The gradual reappearance of the verdant vegetation, the white blossoms of the almond trees, and that hard-to-explain inner joy and jubilation that comes with the passing of cold, dark, and snowy winter all seemed to impress my young mind, imbuing it with a sense of wonder at nature in the most celebrative manner possible. How lucky to be alive! Seeing this majestic little bird reappear and give its cheerful call would evoke in my young soul the existence of an unfathomable mystical Platonic realm that not only had an awareness of joy and jubilation associated with rebirth but also seemed to celebrate it, just like we humans do. Witnessing the universal transformation all around the valley, you did feel that sense of Rebirth, that our ancestors had immortalized in myths, festivities, and traditions, but also in art.

I was particularly attracted to the rare paintings of the hoopoes in wide open fields or on the forest edges, displayed in the local museum. I remember seeing a hoopoe, one early spring morning at the woods nearby, and later using watercolors to recapture the scene. That specific sunrise seems have etched one of the few easily retrievable memories from my childhood in my brain.

Whereas during my travels, I have relied on a camera, ink, or graphite drawings to catch a snapshot of a moment, during my vacations, however, I often had watercolors with me. And later, in Berlin, come Spring, I would go to local lakes amidst forests with watercolors and pads and immerse myself in the Spring transformation of the segment of the world still free from cement and signboards and masses of increasingly louder and more often attention-seeking, with many gadgets and loudspeakers, blessed humans. A single loudspeaker is capable of drowning the call of all the hoopoes of the planet! I never, however, saw a hoopoe in Berlin, though they do sometimes breed in East and South Germany and as far north as Latvia.

The sub-category FS_includes works, in which the colors are smeared on paper with fingers and thumb

This whole watercolor sub-series started by chance. After getting married in Las Vegas, we made a honeymoon trip through Nevada to Florida. On the way, I found some aquarelle and gouache colors from brands unknown to me. I purchased a few just to test them later at home. However, some of the lodges had some letter pads in the room for their analogue-age guests, surprisingly made of high-quality matte paper (shown in the collage further below), and not having a brush, I started rubbing the newly purchased colors with my fingers, onto the hotel pads, just to see how good they were. Although many of the color boxes did not show any lightfastness ratings, a few did, and a few were astoundingly quite brilliant in tint. This method resulted in a distinct form of visual representation, very different from brush strokes. Subsequently, I continued to apply this technique to other types of papers.
